JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Over 500 children in the Region 8 area are at risk of hunger and a new grant will provide fruit to some of those children.
The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas was just awarded a grant from the Blue and You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas.
The $24,000 from this grant will be used to supply fruit for the back pack program in Region 8 schools.
"The mission of the back pack program is to provide food for our children at risk of hunger who otherwise may have nothing to eat of the weekend when they don't have access to the school free breakfast and lunch programs," Vicki Pillow, Director of Development for the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas said.
The food bank is currently providing backpacks every week for 595 children in 8 school districts.
"Children that don't have anything to eat over the weekend, they come into class on Monday, and they can't concentrate," Pillow said. "All they can think about is a stomach ache or a headache and they just can't keep up with the other children in class."
Pillow said students receive backpacks of food every weekend. It takes only $150 to sponsor a child for the entire year.
