JONESBORO -- Around 80 students from area high schools were sporting some of the finest in prom, pageant, and formal attire all to benefit the Northeast Arkansas March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation.

"We interviewed all of the girls who wanted to participate. We wanted to see if they knew anything about the March of Dimes, just to see if they knew what they were helping,"said student, Caitlin Farris.

The March of Dimes is a national foundation whose goal is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.

The March of Dimes also stresses the importance of prenatal care.

Through ticket sales to this annual event, organizers say they hope to exceed the more than 1900 dollars raised at last year's event.

Organizers say that goal was met.

This year, more than three thousand dollars was raised for the March of Dimes.

Becky Street works for the Northeast Arkansas Chapter of the March of Dimes.

"It's important to get people interested in their community, and get them involved in their community. Soon, their going to be our community leaders. It's important for them to know there's other things out there that need help from them. If they get involved when they are young, they stay involved as they get older,"said Street.
