LAFAYETTE, LA (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's basketball team suffered its second set back of the Sun Belt Conference season with a 69-57 loss at Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday night at the Cajun Dome.
With the loss A-State fell to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Ragin' Cajuns improved to 12-5 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Arkansas State never led in the second half and trailed for most of the final period. Jasmine Hunt scored a career-high 20 points and narrowly missed her second career double-double with nine rebounds, while Hanna Qedan also finished in double-figured with 13 points, including three, 3-pointers.
“We didn't change any in the second half,” A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. “I said the other night after Georgia State that we didn't change any and tonight was no different except that we were on the road and this is the result of that.”
Qedan tied the game at 36-36 to open the second half with a 3-pointer, and Hunt tied the game again at 40-40 and then it was once more at 42-42 when Aundrea Gamble scored her first points of the game with 10:28 remaining, but from that point ULL controlled the game and built a double-digit lead with 2:28 left.
Arkansas State struggled with Louisiana-Lafayette's defensive pressure in the first half and committed nine turnovers that led to 18 points on the other end. That pressure allowed the Ragin' Cajuns to jump out to a quick 8-2 advantage, while on the opposite end of the floor Jamie Ruffins and Brittney Gill picked up two early fouls and were forced to the bench for much of the half.
The Red Wolves fought back and tied the game at 10 after a 3-pointer by Qedan, but ULL responded with a 7-0 run to push its lead to seven. The Red Wolves fought back again and got within 21-20 but the Ragin' Cajuns answered again with a 3-pointer to go up 24-20.
Arkansas State settled down offensively from that point and committed just one more turnover the remainder of the half. Hunt also enjoyed a strong first half with 10 points and six rebounds and put the Red Wolves back on top with an and-1 play at the 4:53 mark to go up 27-26.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half until ULL's Robbie Brown hit a 3-pointer with 29 seconds to go in the half, while Qedan's attempt before the buzzer came up short to send the Red Wolves into the break trailing 36-33.
The squad will return to action Saturday, Jan. 24 at Troy. The game is set for a 2s p.m. tip-off and can be heard live on 95.3FM The Ticket/970AM KNEA or online at AStateRedWolves.com.
