CAVE CITY, AR (KAIT) - Our Teacher of the Month for January is a real "caveman". A Cave City Caveman to be exact, Mr. Carey Byars.
Mr. Byars has been teaching in Cave City for the past 3 years and also heads up Caveman-TV.
He was nominated by one of his students, who said he not only helped her get a scholarship to college, but gave her a dream.
A Region 8 News crew surprised Mr. Byars in class, which is not a typical classroom. It's an environment with lights, cameras and tons of action.
Mr. Byars said his students work on projects like commercials and music videos. Television news is also part of his curriculum.
But teaching was not always part of Mr. Byars' career path, "I worked in TV news. I was a weather anchor for a while. I worked in radio at KISS FM."
After some time in the business, Mr. Byars stepped out of his comfort zone going from the studio to the classroom. "Having to stand in front of a class, I was scared to death to teach for the first time," Mr. Byars said.
Even if his students do not pursue a career in television, Mr. Byars said his students gain skills that can help them in life.
He added, "They develop self-esteem, students do. It means a lot to me, it's a passion for me and it's exciting to maybe instill that passion in other people and they can understand why I love it so much."
Mr. Byars also said just knowing that he played a small part in his student's futures makes it all worthwhile.
In addition to his current stint at Cave City High School, Mr. Byars has made stops at William Jewell College, John Brown University and Arkansas State University.
