JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Cancer Program at St. Bernards Medical Center was recently accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
To earn accreditation, a program must meet at least 34 quality care standards.
The program also received special commendation for additional steps it takes to enhance patient care.
One of those steps is a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer that involves a panel of physicians.
"A panel of physicians who meet on a regular basis. Review each case and make a consensus plan about the best approach and treatment plan," said Dr. Mazen Khalil. "Basically a panel physicians personalize the care for each case and each patient."
The panel includes surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists.
