POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) - Police say suspects in an armed home invasion that sent a man to the hospital were apparently trying to steal a large amount of drugs.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday, officers were called to the emergency room of Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center regarding a patient who had been shot. Christopher Gregory, 27, was later transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of his injuries.
Witnesses to the shooting told investigators two black men wearing dark clothes and masks had broken in the front door of a home located in the 1600-block of Sanders.
The suspects reportedly flashed a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic pistol at those inside the home and shouted "give us everything."
As the suspects searched the home, witnesses say the men fired their weapons several times, saying "tell us where it's at or next time we won't miss."
One of the shots fired by the suspects apparently struck Gregory in the back.
Following the shooting, the suspects then ran from the scene. Witnesses told police nothing was taken during the robbery attempt.
While processing the crime scene, detectives reported finding approximately 2 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $7,000 inside the home.
The case is still under investigation and trace evidence has been forwarded to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab for examination.
