JFD: Construction work caused fire at Centennial Bank Stadium

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Jonesboro Fire Department battled a fire at the construction site of Centennial Bank Stadium Monday night.

Crews saw the fire coming from the the very top of the press box when they arrived, according to Jonesboro Fire Department Battalion Chief Brett Winstead.

Winstead also said construction work going on at the press box resulted in the fire. "The very roof of the former press box had a plywood floor down and they were up there welding and cutting it looked like and it caught the plywood on fire," he said.

Although the fire was quickly put out and there were no reports of injuries, it was still a dangerous situation for firefighters.

"Of course temperatures dropping and we're just about 200 feet in the air. The wind chill was pretty bad up there. Everywhere the water was, it was starting to ice pretty quick," Winstead said.

But since the gutted press box is mostly steel and concrete right now, Winstead said construction should continue as normal.

The multi-million dollar press box is currently under construction as Arkansas State University hopes to have it completed by the time the Red Wolves kickoff against the Missouri Tigers later this year.
