Knights of Columbus Lobbying Legislature to Allow Charity Bingo in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Members of a Catholic men's group are lobbying the state Legislature to pass a bill that would allow charity bingo games.

Representative Shirley Borhauer of Bella Vista proposed legislation that would change the Arkansas constitution to allow the charity games.  Only Arkansas, Utah, Tennessee and Hawaii bar the practice.

David Witt, the state advocate for the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, has written to officers in 64 local councils and asked that members lobby legislators to support Borhauer's effort.

Last July the Catholic Bishop for Arkansas directed all churches under his control to discontinue sponsoring bingo games to avoid any possible conflict with state law.
