CSM names A-State Baseball's Burgess, Owen Preseason All-SBC

JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – Arkansas State first baseman Matt Burgess and starting pitcher David Owen have been selected to the College Sports Madness (CSM) 2015 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Baseball Team the online collegiate news service announced Saturday.

Burgess, a junior from Greenbrier, Ark., claimed first-team honors by CSM, which selected a first team and second team comprised of 12 players each, while Owen, a native of Millington, Tenn., was one of three pitchers named to the first team.

CSM honored Burgess at the conclusion of last season by placing him on their All-Sun Belt First Team after he was ranked at or near the top in most offensive statistical categories for the Red Wolves.  He led the team with 72 hits, a .313 batting average, and 58 RBIs, with the RBI total ranking second in the SBC and 15th in the nation.  Additionally, he was second on the squad in home runs (4), slugging percentage (.422), tied for second in on-base percentage (.390), and tied for third in doubles with 13.  He started 53 games at first base and only had two errors for a .995 fielding percentage.

Owen became the first pitcher in school history to be named to the Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year watch list after starting 15 games on the bump for the Red Wolves a season ago.  He recorded a 4.19 ERA with a team-high 76 strikeouts in 77.1 innings pitched and his strikeout total ranked sixth in the league.  He was tied for the team lead in wins with five and held hitters to a .254 batting average, the lowest among A-State starting pitchers.
