OXFORD, MS (arkansasrazorbacks.com) - The University of Arkansas men's basketball team trailed by one point with eight seconds left on the clock, but a successful layup by sophomore Manuale Watkins pushed the Razorbacks ahead for a 71-70 win over Ole Miss in front of a sold out Tad Smith Coliseum on Saturday night.
With the victory, the Razorbacks improved to 20-5 overall, 9-3 in the SEC, while the Rebels fell to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The 9-3 SEC record solidifies Arkansas' place as the No. 2 team in the conference.
Playing their signature #Fastest40 style of play, four Razorbacks scored in double-digits. Junior Michael Qualls led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Shreveport, Louisiana native made 3-of-4 three pointers and shot 6-of-11 from the floor. Just behind Qualls was freshman Anton Beard who scored a career-high 14 points, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from behind the arc.
The final two Arkansas players in double figures were sophomore Bobby Portis and senior Rashad Madden. Portis scored 12 and grabbed five rebounds, while Madden claimed 10 points, five rebounds and tied for a game-high six assists.
Watkins also proved to be a key contributor against the Rebels. Aside from his game-winning bucket, the sophomore scored a total of eight points shooting 4-of-4 from the floor and had one steal in just 14 minutes of playing time.
