February Teacher of the Month: Summer Hampton

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Region 8 News February Teacher of the Month is a kindergarten teacher at University Heights Elementary School. Summer Hampton was nominated by a parent, who says Mrs. Hampton treats the kids like they are her own.

“I'm glad that I was a mommy first before I was a teacher,” Summer Hampton said. “Because I truly want to treat every single one of these kids like I would want someone to treat my son.”

When her son started kindergarten, Mrs. Hampton decided to get back in the classroom. “I didn't want to miss a minute of his life and when he went to kindergarten, I went with him as a teacher's aide,” Hampton said.

This is her second year teaching, but it is obvious Mrs. Hampton knows how to relate to young children. “One of my boys loves the drums, one loves basketball, loves to hunting,” Hampton said. “I just try to get to know my kids and what interests them.”

That knowledge gives her the ability to cater to each child individually. “I just want to instill something in my kids that to never give up, you know, and to try your very best every day,” Hampton said. “I want them to leave loving school, loving how to read, loving math, and just knowing that their first time at school was a great experience.”

Mrs. Hampton shares all those great experiences in the classroom on a private page set up for parents on Facebook.
