Twice a victim: Protecting your stuff from thieves

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were 1.9 million burglaries in the United States in 2013 with victims losing approximately $4.5 billion in property.

Just 13% of those cases were cleared; meaning a suspect was arrested, charged with the crime and turned over to the court for prosecution.

In order to protect your property, the Insurance Information Institute suggests property owners and renters create a home inventory that includes photos, descriptions, serial numbers, and costs of furnishings and valuables.

The III also offers a free app available in the App Store and on Google Play.

You might also want to check with your insurance provider to see if they have an available spreadsheet, online program or app to create a home inventory.

For example, Allstate's Digital Locker is available to anyone to download and use. State Farm and Liberty Mutual, among others, also offer online inventory checklists for their customers.

Microsoft Excel and Apple Numbers also provide free home inventory templates that you can fill out and save to your computer or tablet.

For those who aren't plugged in, just use a folder or notebook.
