LEPANTO, AR (KAIT) - Lepanto residents said they smelled diesel shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday.
That diesel flowed from the Jordan's Kwik Stop on the corner of Highway 140 and 135 into nearby streets and through many yards.
James Killingsworth and his wife were the first to report the diesel on the streets to the Lepanto Police Department.
Killingsworth said when he and his wife got to the Post Office they noticed the strong smell of diesel and could see it floating on the water in the streets.
When his wife went in to check the mail, she got diesel on her shoes and clothes.
After reporting the incident to the police, an officer was sent to check out the scene.
Killingsworth said it's been the talk of the town.
"Somebody said some barrels turned over with some diesel in them," Killingsworth said. "I heard that the cap was not put back on the tank and all the rain water got in it and flooded it. Which diesel floats on water so it all came out. And then I heard the tanker had leaked it out."
Lepanto police would not release any information to Region 8 News, but told us to call the Office of Emergency Management.
