JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A local animal right's organization seized more than 30 dogs from a residence west of Jonesboro Thursday afternoon, according to the Craighead County Sheriff's Office.
Volunteers with Arkansas Angels 4 Animals went to a residence on Craighead County Road 160 Thursday afternoon, where they claim to have found 31 dogs in a trailer. The animals were living in "horrid" conditions, according to Angie Heringer.
Craighead County Sheriff's Investigator Rusty Grigsby told Region 8 News that the case is under investigation. He said his job was to "keep the peace" while AA4A "rescued" the dogs.
Sheriff Marty Boyd said his office assisted the organization with obtaining a search warrant.
The animals have since been taken to a local vet, where veterinarians are providing care, Heringer said.
The owner, who has not been charged, can file a petition in district court to keep the animals within 15 days of the seizure. A prosecutor will then look at the petition and determine what happens to the dogs.
