MELBOURNE, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 man is charged with three counts of child endangerment after police say he struck the kids and tried to force another to ingest blood tainted with hepatitis C.
In addition to the child endangerment charges, James Edward Filchak, 41, of Oxford is also charged with domestic battering and resisting arrest.
Around midnight Wednesday, Feb. 25, an Izard County sheriff's deputy was called to a home in the Oxford area.
A 12-year-old boy told the deputy Filchak had beaten his mom. The woman, who appeared "visibly upset," confirmed the assault, the report said.
According to the report from the sheriff's office, 3 children witnessed the assault. Filchak hit one of the children, leaving marks on her face and arms. He also threw a coffee can at one of the children, then slapped the child in the back of the head, the report said.
It was also reported that Filchak, who has hepatitis C, "took blood from a small scratch on his arm and attempted to put some of it in one of the children's mouth."
Filchak is being held in the Izard County Detention Center in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
