Funeral arrangements set for former Poinsett Co. judge

POINSETT COUNTY, AR (KAIT) - Funeral arrangements have been announced for a former Poinsett County judge.

A funeral for Judge Charles Nix will be held Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Harrisburg at 10 a.m.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Jackson's Funeral Home also in Harrisburg.

Nix served three terms as elected judge before retiring last year. Poinsett County Sheriff Larry Mills confirmed to Region 8 News he died early Saturday morning.

Sheriff Mills said he worked with Nix even before he was county judge and said they had a really good working relationship.

Sheriff Mills said Nix, “never tried to be sheriff and he never tried to be judge.”

The sheriff said he will be missed by many.

United States Senator John Boozman told President Barack Obama in a letter about Nix's retirement that he served the citizens of Arkansas honorably.

In that letter, Boozman said Nix, “faced and overcame several disasters including the 2011 flood and multiple tornadoes.”

He also credited Nix for playing a pivotal role in leading the county through the storms, repairing the damages and restoring the livelihood of the citizens.

Boozman said Nix went above his duties as judge and served as a member of the County Judges Association of Arkansas, Crowley's Ridge Development Council Board, Eastern Arkansas Planning and Development Council Board and Northwest Arkansas Workforce Investment.

He also was president of the Harrisburg Area Chamber of Commerce and served in the Army National Guard for six years.
