Agency hosts financial planning workshop for seniors

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging hosted a financial planning workshop on Tuesday to make sure senior citizens have the facts.

Attorney Aaron Heller with Owens, Mixon and Gramling in Jonesboro discussed topics like a living will, trusts, power of attorney and protecting ones property.

Heller said the first step a senior should take is to simply talk to their family.

“Their family is their first resource to talk to them and try to get them help,” Heller said. “If they don't know what to do on their own, they can reach out to organizations in the community like The East Arkansas Area Agency to ask what they can do to protect themselves.”

Heller said it's important that people take proactive steps in making sure their family knows exactly what they want.

“We can't anticipate things that happen like illness and accidents, but a little planning now can go a long way to protecting yourself and your family in the future,” Heller said.

He recommends people contact an attorney to walk them through the process of any issues they have.

Around 30 people attended Tuesday's workshop.
