JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With the recent precipitation and flooding, a water shortage in Arkansas is the last thing on most people's minds.
Members of the Jonesboro Rotary Club invited an expert on the situation to talk to them on Tuesday.
Manager Edward Swaim with the Water Resource Management Division said the biggest problem we face with Arkansas water issues has to do with the ground water.
"The problem that we have with water is primarily in agriculture irrigation because we depend on groundwater so much for that," Swaim said. "We are taking out more water than is being replaced by natural recharge."
Swaim said there is one way to take care of the water issue in the state.
"We have plenty of water, we just need to manage it wisely and invest in the future of water," Swaim said.
Swaim said the answer is to reduce water use through conservation and to put the more abundant surface water to use.
