JACKSONVILLE, FL (arkansasrazorbacks.com) – In a fast-paced game in which the lead changed 11 times, the fifth-seeded University of Arkansas men's basketball team was defeated by fourth-seeded North Carolina 87-78 at the Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday.
With the loss, the Razorbacks fell to 27-9 overall, while the Tar Heels improved to 26-11 on the season and advanced to the Sweet 16 where they will face the winner of Wisconsin vs. Oregon on March 26 in Los Angeles, California.
Four Arkansas players scored in double digits. Michael Qualls again led the team with a game-high 27 points. The junior shot 8-of-19 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the stripe along with grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore Bobby Portis also came away with a double-double, scoring 18 points and with a game-high 14 boards. The Little Rock, Arkansas native shot 5-of-15 from the field and went 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
Also in double figures were senior Rashad Madden and junior Anthlon Bell. Madden claimed 13, while Bell made 11 buckets. Both shot well from distance as Bell made three from behind the arc while Madden made two three pointers. Madden also led the team with five assists.
Despite shooting 37% from the floor, the Razorbacks went 22-of-27 (81%) from the stripe. Arkansas was also strong on the glass, collecting 39 rebounds.
