Osceola Loses Out on Steel Mill

JANUARY 27, 2005 - Posted at 4:13 p.m. CST

OSCEOLA, AR - Osceola has lost a chance to be the home to a planned steel mill that would have created hundreds of jobs, the city's mayor said.

Osceola Mayor Dickie Kennemore told the Columbus, Mississippi newspaper that the state had offered more attractive incentives than Arkansas.

Scott Hamilton of the Mississippi Development Authority would not comment.

Former Nucor-Yamato executive John Correnti founded SteelCorr and has been looking for a site for a plant he wants to build.  The mill could employ 500 people.

Officials in Lowndes County have stopped short of confirming that Correnti has chosen an industrial area known locally as the "Megasite."  But the land has been the center of increased activity since late last year; survey crews have been working, airplanes have been flying over and engineers have been at the property.
