Jonesboro residents can now register their storm shelter

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Severe weather season is just getting started and it has people preparing across the region.

Some things that are not thought of is what happens if it does hit your house and you become trapped in your safe place.

Jonesboro E-911 has thought of this and with that they have implemented a program that allows people to register their storm shelters and safe rooms.

E-911 Director Jeff Presley said that they implemented this plan after they had learned from storms that had hit other areas.

"In Joplin, Missouri the big tornado a few years ago, they had folks that was trapped inside a safe room or a shelter for many days after a storm," Presley said.

Presley said when a storm comes through it can take out landmarks, like street signs, that can make it hard to find where people need help.

With the storm shelter registry they can pinpoint where you are and free you from your shelter if you become trapped because it allows them to know where you are.

To have your storm shelter or safe room registered you can access it on Jonesboro's new website here.

Thanksgiving is a time to be with loved ones and enjoy good food, but since that is not an option for everyone, members of the Jonesboro community came together to make sure as many people as possible were fed.
