Farmers take advantage of recent rain

CROSS COUNTY, AR (KAIT) -

It's been a rainy March. Some areas of Region 8 were 3 inches above average for the first month of Spring and last month of Winter.

The rain prevented some farmers from being able to access the fields to work.

Other farmers, however, took advantage of the rain and caught in ditches to use later in the year.

Cross County farmer Will Nicholson used a ditch on his farm to catch the water. He says it has many uses.

"Our ground water is anything from 80 to 100 feet here, where our ditch is now, we're going to be pulling from about 20 feet at all time there," Nicholson said.

Nicholson said this makes pumping costs much cheaper because it is a shorter area.

The rain water also makes for a healthier rice crop and the ditch helps reduce flooding in surrounding areas.
