Man's impounded car stolen while he was in jail

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 man said his car was stolen from an impound lot while he was sitting in jail on drug charges.

Travis McCain and his wife were arrested in Bono following a traffic stop.

A K-9 officer found controlled substances in the car and the two were taken to the Craighead County Jail on felony charges.

A towing company was then called to tow McCain's stranded vehicle.

McCain said while he was behind bars, his 2000 Chevy Cavalier was stolen from that towing company.

We spoke with the owner of Fowler's Towing, Sonny Fowler. Fowler said he put the car behind a locked, gated area. However, when he got to work on Monday, the chain to the gate was cut and only McCain's car was stolen.

McCain told Region 8 News that he's a victim.

"Bonded out thinking I'm going to get my vehicle and just get back on my feet and that ain't the case," McCain said. "It just keeps going downhill."

McCain told us that he believes the officer who pulled him over and the owner of the towing company had something to do with the theft of his car.

However, Fowler believes someone affiliated with McCain is involved.

Sonny Fowler told Region 8 News that he spoke with police and his insurance company. Fowler said they both told him that as the keys to the car were inside his business and the car was behind a locked gate, it wasn't his fault.

The McCains later told Fowler that there was another key inside the vehicle but he said he does not search through the cars he tows for additional items.

Fowler said he believes the circumstances are suspicious as the thieves would have passed multiple cars in better shape than the McCain's before they stole the Cavalier.

According to the Jonesboro Police Department, the case has been reviewed by the Criminal Investigation Division. The case will remain on inactive status until new leads develop.
