HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 teen is 1 of 5 in the entire state being recognized for her commitment to excellence.
Keely Edwards, a junior at Harrisburg High School, surpassed hundreds of juniors across the state to be one of the Arkansas Activities Association's Interscholastic Stars.
Students are nominated by their teachers and mentors for exemplifying active involvement, a good attitude, and adaptability to challenges.
Edwards' teachers feel she is all of those things. She is involved in a number of activities including softball, basketball, tennis, Hornets against Drinking and Driving, Yearbook Staff, and many more. She is also an active volunteer for multiple community organizations and events.
Edwards describes herself as a positive, outgoing child of God. She said she has learned a lot by being so involved, and she hopes she can encourage others to break out of their shell.
"I've learned confidence," Edwards said. "I've had a lot of confidence. I'm very outgoing, and sports and all these activities, they keep you out of trouble. They don't make you do stuff you shouldn't be doing."
Edwards said she has committed to playing college softball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. She said she is excited to be honored.
Edwards will go to Little Rock on April 15th where she and the other 4 nominees will be interviewed to compete for first, second, and third place and the title of Interscholastic Star.
First place receives a $1,000 savings bond.
