First Lady Gets in the Siding Business

JANUARY 28, 2005 - Posted at 7:28 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas First Lady Janet Huckabee has taken a job selling siding and windows, two years after losing a bid to become secretary of state.  Huckabee told The Associated Press yesterday that she's learning the ropes as the new director of marketing and customer care for Hot Springs-based Hanke Brothers Siding & Windows, Incorporated.

It is Mrs. Huckabee's first employment outside the home since her husband, Mike, became Arkansas governor in 1996.  Her first attempt to expand her beyond those of first lady was her failed bid for secretary of state in 2002.

She said she started looking for a job outside the home last year after earning her bachelor's degree in organizational management from John Brown University in Siloam Springs.  She said she stumbled upon the job at Hanke Brothers while shopping for leaf-free gutters for the family home at Daisy in Garland County.  The Huckabees are friends with Hanke Brothers' chief executive Kim Hanke, and he offered the job to Mrs. Huckabee after a meeting.
