Shower, 'horseplay' lead to sexual assault charges for Jonesboro man

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A Jonesboro man is charged with sexual assault after police say he admitted to molesting a young boy in the shower and while "horseplaying."

Eric Michael Tavares, 38, is being held in lieu of $10,000 bond at the Craighead County Detention Center on a charge of second degree sexual assault.

According to court documents, the 10-year-old male victim told an Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children investigator that Tavares touched his genitals and buttocks several times.

The victim said the molestation began 1-2 years ago while Tavares was living with him and his mother, the affidavit said.

On March 18 the investigator reported the incidents to Jonesboro police.

When Jonesboro detectives interviewed Tavares he initially denied the accusations.

"He eventually admitted that on two occasions he became sexually aroused by the victim," the affidavit said. "One such occasion was when the victim was in the shower…the other occasion was when he and the victim were horseplaying."

According to the court documents, Tavares said he "never acted on his sexual desires."

He is scheduled to appear in circuit court on May 29.
