Caruthersville native remembers devastating tornado 9 years ago

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) -

An EF 3 tornado ripped through parts of Pemiscot County 9 years ago Thursday, damaging businesses, homes, and schools.

Caruthersville native, David Simpson was living in Kennett at the time of the storm and said it was devastating to come to his hometown after the storm and see it in shambles.

“We heard the sirens,” Simpson said. “The safest place for my family was our shed, it was solid concrete out in the back.”

What happened next scared Simpson and his family.

“When we were heading out there, we saw the tornado jump over out house,” Simpson said. “From then on, the tornado went straight into Caruthersville.”

Simpson said the city has done a great job rebuilding, but he doesn't think it has the same feel it used to.

“There was really so much that happened to this town,” Simpson said. “We recovered fast and the people of caruthersville are very hearty, we bounce back from things real easy.”
