USPS to hold food drive for Food Bank of NEA

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas needs your help.

The National Association of Letter Carriers' annual ''Stamp Out Hunger'' Food Drive is set for May 9.

According the USPS website, carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left near mailboxes.

Those collections will then be delivered to the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas.

On a weekly basis, 5,000 people from Region 8 visit the food bank of NEA.

Director of Development for the Food Bank Vicki Pillow said many people think donations are only needed during the holidays, but donations are important during the summer while kids are out of school.

‘'Kids are out of school. Kids that have that lunch program at school, don't have that during the summer,” Pillow said. “This food drive helps us give to those families so they'll have that food.”

Pillow said donations are important and help families, but volunteers are needed as well.

"The Food Bank is able to do what we do with the help of volunteers," Pillow said. "We couldn't do it without them. Those volunteers come in, help us get that food ready to give out to our agencies. That following week it goes directly to families at risk of hunger."
