St. Bernards promotes healthy living at annual expo

St. Bernards Medical Group kicked off its 8th annual health and fitness expo Saturday.

Booths packed the Convocation Center at Arkansas State University, offering health products, fitness gear and more to their visitors.

The public could also enjoy cooking demonstrations and ask health officials pressing questions about various topics, including cancer, orthopedics and heart failure.

"Your healthcare is a total body experience from your brain down to your toes," said Dr. Jeremy Swymn, a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with St. Bernards. "It deals with how you live, eat, exercise, what you wear, how you feel, what your attitude is. I think all of that is covered in some way here."

Dr. Swymn said the big draw Saturday was the free health screenings.

"My parents live an hour and a half away and they come every year for a screening," said Swymn. "We have people from all over the place come for a free health screening. It's not like you can get that anywhere, anytime so I think it's a huge draw for people. It makes it an area-wide event for all of northeast Arkansas as opposed to just Jonesboro itself."

The health and fitness expo continues Sunday with a kid's run, more cooking demonstrations and athlete physicals.

"It's [the athlete physicals] just something that's not done anywhere else," Swymn said. "It's something that we've pushed to be recognized nationally for doing. The NCAA is now on board. All NCAA athletes get an EKG. We were doing this way before the NCAA jumped on board so it's a big deal for us, a big deal for the kids and something we're really proud of."
