BROKEN ARROW, OK (ASU) – Competing in its final tournament before the Sun?Belt Conference Championship, the Arkansas State men's golf team finished the ORU?Shootout's first round Monday in seventh place among 14 teams after shooting a 317 at the Forest Ridge Golf Club.
The Red Wolves were led by two players ending the first round among the top 20 leaders, including Christian?Helmbold in a tie for sixth place and Tanner Napier in a tie for 13th. Helmbold and Napier carded a 76 and 78, respectively.
Arkansas State trails Oral Roberts and Northern Iowa, currently tied for fifth place, by only one stroke and is within six of first-place Midland College. Creighton and Missouri State are tied for second place with a 314, while SIU-Edwardsville is fourth with a 315.
Also competing for the Red Wolves, Oswin Schlenkrich is tied for 28th place with an 80, Matt Loiacano tied for 55th with an 83 and Seth Garner tied for 64th with an 85.
The tournament was originally scheduled to include three rounds, but heavy rain forced several delays today and it has now been shortened to 36 holes. The ORU?Shootout's second and final round will be played Tuesday.
