JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

The names of those involved in a deadly officer-involved shooting late Tuesday night have been released.

Jonesboro police said in a statement the officer involved was Patrolman First Class Heath Loggains. The man who was shot and killed was 31-year-old Christopher Grant Finley of Jonesboro.

According to a Jonesboro Police Department news release, officers were dispatched to 900 Walnut Street in Jonesboro around 9 p.m. Tuesday in response to Finley who was wanted on previous, unrelated violent felony charges.

Finley was reportedly armed with a baseball bat, screaming in the front yard.

When officers arrived, Finley fled into his home and officers were unable to enter, the news release stated.

Around 11:40 p.m. Finley emerged from the home and Loggains confronted him. Police said Finley fled into his home again but the officer pursued him.

Police stated Finley entered his home and "attempted to slam the door shut on the pursuing officer."

As Loggains was pushing on the door, police said Finley struck the officer on the arm with a machete.

The officer then drew his weapon and fired several times at Finley, according to the news release.

Loggains did not know if the man was struck by the gunfire so Finley was still considered armed and dangerous, JPD stated.

A tactical team with Jonesboro police was notified and made entry into the home around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police said Finley appeared to be lifeless.

Craighead County Coroner Toby Emerson pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Loggains was released from a local hospital after being treated for blunt force trauma that happened during the incident, according to JPD.

He is expected to fully recover and is currently on paid administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome. Loggains has been a Jonesboro police officer since 2007.

Chief Elliott has requested the assistance of Arkansas State Police. ASP is on scene and is investigating.
