JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Jonesboro man faces charges after police say instead of eating pizza he was caught chewing pot.

Carl Edward Vanpelt, 25, claimed during a traffic stop Wednesday he was chewing on a slice of pizza; but, police say it was marijuana.

According to the initial incident report, Officer Christopher Jefferson stopped a red BMW around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Bridge Street and Johnson Avenue after he saw the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

As he was talking to the driver Jefferson noticed that the front seat passenger, later identified as 25-year-old Carl Edward Vanpelt, was chewing on something.

The officer asked what he was eating and Vanpelt “pointed at the back seat at the pizza box,” the report said.

“When Vanpelt began talking, I observed what appeared to be suspected marijuana in his teeth,” Jefferson said.

The officer had Vanpelt get out of the car and asked him to open his mouth.

As he was speaking to the suspect, Jefferson said he could smell a “strong odor of suspected green marijuana from his mouth.”

Jefferson arrested Vanpelt, searched him and took him to the Craighead County Detention Center.

When they arrived at the jail, Jefferson said he found wet marijuana smeared on the back seat where Vanpelt had been sitting. Some had been mashed into the floor, he said.

Vanpelt was left at the CCDC in lieu of a $1,555 surety bond. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence.

The driver was cited for a seat belt violation and released at the scene.
