JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A ground breaking ceremony was held Thursday at the Jonesboro Human Development Center.
They are preparing to build a 9,600 square foot building and a 5,000 square foot greenhouse.
It will house supported employment operations, which will include the current recycling program as well as other employment opportunities the facility offers for people who reside there.
The building will be named after former Arkansas Senator Jerry Bookout.
Senator Bookout was one of the primary supporters for the development center since its beginning.
The Bookout family attended the ceremony and was presented a plaque honoring the former senator's service to people with intellectual disabilities in northeast Arkansas.
Around 100 people attended the groundbreaking.
Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin issued a proclamation claiming April 16, 2015 as JHDC Green Day.
The JHDC has served northeast Arkansas since 1974 by training and caring for people who have intellectual disabilities.
