Pocahontas works to revamp town square

POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - With summer on the way, a Region 8 community is trying to revitalize its landscape.

Pocahontas is working on a beautification project for the town square.

Kary Story, Pocahontas mayor, said during his campaign he heard many concerns about revamping the historic town square.

The city partnered with John 3:16 Ministries to clean up the flower beds in the town square.

They've already cleared some areas and flower beds in good conditions remained.

Story said the city is waiting for flowers and supplies to arrive.

He said the historic town square is a unique part of Pocahontas and it's important to show they take care of it.

"This is one of the, like I said, unique things we have, and I've heard people from out of town and come see our uniqueness, love the square, and say hey that's a place I want to live," Story said. "That is what we want to hear them say."

Story said by partnering with John 3:16 it's been very cost affective.

He hopes to have the landscaping complete in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

The next project will be to improve the roads around the square.

They plan to power wash all of the pavement and repaint parking lot lines.
