BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) - The new Batesville Police Department is one step closer to patrolling the city's streets.
Chief Alan Cockrill said he started interviewing candidates Thursday for the 24 positions he has to fill.
The department will have a narcotics investigator, three criminal investigators and a patrol division.
Chief Cockrill hopes to fill most of the positions by the end of next week.
The department was also finishing up moving to its new location, a former car dealership building on the corner of Central and Boswell.
One Batesville woman said she is excited to see more police on the streets.
"Just a faster turnout when we need it," Rebecca Webb said. "It just seems like it's taken awhile sometimes in the past to get a response."
Chief Cockrill said the department will be busy this weekend painting some of its black and white patrol cars.
He hopes to get one on the street Monday.
