MONROE, LA (ASU) – The Arkansas State baseball team got the tying run to second base in the eighth inning, but ULM center fielder Nathan Pugh made a diving catch to keep the score 3-2 as A-State dropped its fifth consecutive conference game Friday night at Warhawk Field in Monroe, La.
The Red Wolves (14-21, 4-14 SBC) entered the eighth inning trailing 3-1, but ULM (19-18, 6-10 SBC) starter Alex Hermeling walked Austin Baker to begin the frame. Hermeling got the next two hitters to fly out, but Matt Burgess doubled to the right-center field gap to plate Baker and bring A-State within 3-2. Tanner Ring stepped up to the plate and hit the shallow fly ball that Pugh caught that prevented pinch-runner Tim Seldomridge from scoring the tying run.
A-State reliever Chandler Hawkins kept the score at 3-2 with a perfect bottom of the eighth, but Arkansas State went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning against Warhawks' reliever Josh Leone to allow ULM to take a 3-2 series-opening victory.
Hermeling got the win for the Warhawks after throwing eight innings and allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Leone earned his second save of the season with a perfect ninth.
Jon Glidewell went four innings for the Red Wolves to begin the contest and only allowed one earned run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Colton Kibler relieved him and took the loss for A-State after giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Hawkins tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless baseball and only allowed one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.
Offensively, A-State was led by Joe Schrimpf's two hits and Zach George extended his on-base streak to 52 games, a streak that currently leads the nation. Ty White and Burgess each had RBIs.
ULM got on the scoreboard first with a safety squeeze in the fourth inning, but White singled home Collin Massanelli with two outs to tie things up at 1-1 in the seventh. However, the Warhawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double and RBI infield single gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.
