Clerk accused of spray painting camera black in theft case

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Police arrested a clerk after officers found a surveillance camera in the Baymont Inn lobby spray painted black on Wednesday.

Melanie Sullivan, 39, of Jonesboro told officers she had recently passed out and did not know what happened.

According to the incident report, officers weren't able to get information from Sullivan and she was taken to St. Bernards for treatment.

Officers then went inside the inn and saw that someone was trying to get into a safe with a coat hanger.

That broken hanger was still sticking out from the safe.

The owner showed officers surveillance video where Sullivan walked up to the camera and spray painted it.

Officers said that's when a soda machine and the safe were damaged.

The incident report said Sullivan was arrested on a felony charge for criminal mischief and a misdemeanor for theft charge.

According to the Craighead County Sheriff's Department, she was booked on Tuesday morning and released early Wednesday morning.
