Fishing derby teaches kids to stand against drugs

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Hooking onto fish instead of drugs was the theme Saturday at Craighead Forest Park.

The Jonesboro Elks Lodge sponsored the High on Fishing not Drugs Fishing Derby.

The event was free to the public for kids of all ages. The Elks Lodge provided fishing poles and bait along with grilling for all who attended.

Awards were given out for the smallest, largest, and most fish caught.

Kevin Higgins, with the Jonesboro Elks Lodge, said it's a fun event that allows them to share an important message.

"It's just a good way for us to connect to the community and show that we are interested in making kids and parents aware of drugs and issues that come along with using drugs," Higgins said.

The Jonesboro Elks Lodge has put on this event for more than 6 years.

He said even if they are only able to stop a few kids from doing drugs, they've made a difference.
