JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Arkansas State Softball Team has been to the NCSA World Series before but not with the target on their back that is the number one ranking.
The Red Wolves will compete in the National Club Softball Association World Series starting on May 15 and finishing May 17 in Columbus, Georgia.
A-State enters the tournament after winning the Midwest Regional and gaining the first place spot in the NCSA rankings. The Red Wolves are 24-6 overall with a 12-0 conference mark.
At their work out on Thursday, the A-State Softball Team spoke to Region 8 Sports. "I expect to see a lot of teams coming after us this year since we are number one," said Arkansas State Senior Left Fielder Katelyn Brown, "Even if the teams aren't as good they're still going to be fighting to beat us."
Senior Shortstop Mackenzie Powers didn't deny that there was some pressure on the team entering with the number one ranking. "Yes, we definitely have a lot of pressure," she said, "We've never been ranked number one before so we've always been the one to go out and fight for the number one position but being in the number one position we have people coming after us."
Powers and her father, Chris, have been a part of Red Wolves Softball from the ground up. They say it's been fun watching things grow. "We started out at Southside (Softball Complex) scrounging for games and now we're playing NCAA teams," said Powers, "We're playing Henderson, we're playing Williams, we've played Memphis."
Region 8 Sports will be tracking the progress of the World Series both on air and online. For more information on the Red Wolves Softball Club, you can visit their website by clicking here.
