JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - 9:25 p.m., Jan. 4 UPDATE: A map of the proposed overpass at the railroad tracks at Nettleton Avenue and Highland Drive was released by officials Wednesday.
The $15 million project will seek to ease traffic problems in the area. Also, an additional overpass will be built south of the main overpass to divert traffic while the Highland Drive overpass is being built.
The projects are expected to be completed by 2019.
The project to build a new overpass in Jonesboro has the green light to begin.
The City of Jonesboro received a 1.2 million dollar grant TIGER grant in September of 2014.
Monday, representatives with the Arkansas Highway Department, Bridge Farm Associates and the Arkansas Highway Commissioner were at the railroad crossing located at Highland Drive and Nettleton.
They were doing survey work to construct an overpass on Highway 18.
Mayor Harold Perrin said this is something we've been needing for a while.
"When we showed the federal government, with 46 trains coming through here a day, some blocking this intersection by 58 minutes and emergency vehicles having to turn around, school buses turning around, it will be a tremendous asset for the city of Jonesboro," Perrin said.
Perrin said the city will have a design and cost proposal for the project within the next 13 months.
