Teacher shaves beard to help student with brain cancer

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

A Region 8 teacher said goodbye to his beard to help an ill student.

Jesse Gunter has taught at Valley View School District for 12 years and said he's very close to his students.

Gunter decided to bet his beard to help raise money for a student who has brain cancer.

Gunter said if the kids could raise $10,000 he would shave his beard, a beard he has been growing for 4 years and 8 months.

“I'll be honest, I set the goal at 10,000 because I didn't think it would happen,” Gunter said. “But sure enough they came through, so we are very happy.”

The Valley View students raise $13,500, and all of the money is going to help the student with his medical bills.

At an assembly Wednesday morning, Gunter let high school principal, Roland Popejoy, cut into his seasoned beard.

Gunter revealed his new face to the students and faculty at the Valley View High School Gym.

Gunter said he will start growing the beard back immediately.
