Lower fuel prices equal more money to improve roads

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - While gas prices are not as low as they were a few weeks ago, they are cheap enough to aid road workers.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department can spend over one million dollars on fuel alone each year.

District Engineer Walter McMillan said lower fuel prices are helping them do more work in the region.

"That gives us more money to go spend on the repairs we make, like we can buy more asphalt, we can buy, do more bridge work," McMillan said.

McMillan noted none of the money is saved, as it takes a lot to keep the streets in northeast Arkansas in good condition.

Every cent saved on the gas can be spent to improve roads.
