JONESBORO -- Valentine's Day is just around the corner and for millions that means chocolates, cards and spending a lot of money to show your sweetie that you love them. But, if you haven't been hit by cupid's arrow, you shouldn't feel left out.
In 2000, 48% of American households were occupied by unmarried people, meaning more and more singles are on the scene. The National Center for Health Statistics reports that 50% of first marriages end in divorce. And with all those single folks out there that means not everyone is going to be snuggling up this Valentine's Day.
Pop culture has immortalized single women with the characters of Sex and the City and right now, Valentine's Day couldn't be a better time to be a single girl! You've seen their pictures, the outfits and the shoes, and you know that Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha epitomize the single woman. The characters from the hit HBO show Sex & the City not only address once-thought-taboo topics, but also teach women across the world that it's ok to be alone.
"A lot of people get engaged around Valentine's Day. Christmas is over with, and they didn't quiet decide to do it for Christmas, and so they are thinking about Valentine's Day. They want to get married perhaps in the summer, so springtime is a big time for engagements," said Steve Pagan of Pagan's Jewelry.
And if it's just the opposite, like the SATC episode when Berger dumped Carrie via Post-It note, or if you get the classless phone call, Valentine's Day, can be a harrowing experience for the single girl. But if there's no sweetheart for you, don't worry sister; you just go buy yourself your own ring!
"Several years the marketing division of the diamond trading company that we know as DeBeers, decided to create a product or awareness of a product for today's working woman. A woman who can decide and buy her own jewelry," said Pagan, "It's a piece of jewelry specifically designed for the right hand not to be complicated or confused with the wedding rings that go on the left hand."
The right hand ring trend has hit the scene here in Region 8. Jewelers at Pagan's say it's a popular choice.
"We have a lot of woman who are very independent in Jonesboro and make their own money and decide how to spend it," said Pagan.
And when you're single, treating yourself is worth every dime.
"Something as simple as a new tube of red lipstick, can wipe away the blues," laughed Eden Spa owner Jana Brandt.
Many single women this year are celebrating Valentine's Day with their friends, spa style. The Eden Spa in Jonesboro offers a variety of services.... for the body and the soul.
"Something as simple as a shampoo and style. You know that feeling, there's something magical that happens when somebody plays with your hair," said Brandt, "Also, massage and touch are shown to alleviate depression, alleviate pain."
And if it makes a single girl walk confidently down the street on Valentine's Day...well, you go girl!
