RAFAH, EGYPT (CNN) - In a purported statement posted on Twitter, an ISIS-affiliated group in the Sinai claimed responsibility for an attack on Thursday on an Egyptian Navy ship in the Mediterranean Sea near the Gaza border city of Rafah.

The group's statement claimed it targeted the ship using a "guided missile" and released several photos of the alleged attack. CNN cannot confirm the authenticity of the photographs.

Egypt's military confirms there was an incident on a military vessel near Rafah on Thursday. An official statement from Egypt's army reports a military vessel caught fire on Thursday following a firefight between security forces and suspected militants.

The incident left no casualties and the military had been patrolling the area for "terrorists," says the statement issued by Egyptian Army Spokesman General Mohammad Samir.
