Schools Don't Get Message of Statewide Drill

February 16, 2005--Posted 6:00 pm CST

Jonesboro, AR--A statewide tornado drill was gone with the wind earlier today when local schools received no notification.  Several Craighead county schools were called and expressed surprise by the news of the pending statewide drill.  During the drill sirens across Jonesboro were supposed to have sounded.

“As far as I know we did not receive a memo,” Fox Meadow Principal Dale Case said. “I don’t think it was in the paper either.”

David Moore the Craighead County 911 Coordinator confirmed sirens did go off across Craighead County.  Officials with the county said schools should have had information on the drill, but even with the confusion consider the day a success.

Moore says his worry is people will take events like these less serious due to the county have recent good luck concerning severe weather.  “We get kind of complacent and that is the worst thing we can do we need to stay focused on the weather and keep in our minds how dangerous it can be.”
