American Red Cross needs help saving lives

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The American Red Cross needs your help to continue saving lives.

The summer months are here, so people are enjoying their time off but that doesn't mean there is a break in the need for blood.

Michelle Rupp with the American Red Cross said they've seen a drop in the donations they rely on.

During June, July and August, about 2 fewer donors than what patients need show up to each blood drive.

That can add up to more than 100,000 fewer donations during the summer.

"We still need that 20%," Rupp said about the donations they are missing. "We factor that in to our day-to-day supply, so the need remains even though a big chunk of our donors go on summer vacation."

The Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at around 2,600 hospitals and centers across the country.

One pint of your blood can save 3 lives.

You can make an appointment to donate by visiting the Red Cross website or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
