Trumann Food Pantry distributing free fruits and vegetables

TRUMANN, AR (KAIT) -

A Region 8 food pantry is trying out a new pilot program to help feed the hungry.

On Tuesdays, the Trumann Food Pantry has a line out the door.

They are partnering with Feeding America and the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas to bring free fruits and vegetables to people in need.

Volunteer Chris Laire, who see the need in Poinsett County, said it's been going well since starting in May.

“They want us to put in more fruits and vegetables into people’s diets," Laire said. "The more we can give away the better it is for everybody involved.”

On Tuesday, the pantry had a trailer full of potatoes and fresh corn.

Laire said the shipment is different every week, but there are no requirements to pick up the free fruits and vegetables.

Trumann is one of 10 food pantries out of 100 chosen for this pilot program.

Laire said it’s their job to test the program out to hopefully show it is a good thing to expand and continue.

The pantry is located at 610 Walnut Street in Trumann and passes out the food on Tuesdays from 12 to 5:30 p.m.

Thanksgiving is a time to be with loved ones and enjoy good food, but since that is not an option for everyone, members of the Jonesboro community came together to make sure as many people as possible were fed.
