13 is lucky number for young man in musical

Conner Barnes is 14 years old, but 13 is his lucky number for the production he is currently in at the Forum in downtown Jonesboro.

Barnes moved from West Memphis to the area last August.

“13 the Musical” is his 13th role in community theater productions.

He plays the role of Archie. Archie's best friend is Evan Goldman. Goldman is grappling with his parents’ divorce, preparing for his Bar Mitzvah and navigating the complicated social circles of a new school.

“Archie has neurodegenerative muscular disease,” Barnes explained. “He’s kind of a misfit, but he’s friends with another girl who is a misfit.”

Barnes is one of only 13 cast members in the production.

“13 the Musical" is the first and only Broadway musical to have an all teenager cast and band.

The production at the Forum mirrors that concept.

“I really like how Archie looks at himself and thinks he’s a ladies man, but he really isn’t,” Barnes said. “He thinks that every girl wants him, or at least the girl that he really likes wants him.”

The cast and crew have been working on the production since the end of May.

Tickets are still available for July 26 at 2 p.m.
