Day 1 of Football Fan Playoff sees tight race, runaway

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The inaugural day of the Region 8 Sports Football Fan Playoff saw a tight matchup and one local fan base runaway with the competition.

In play-in round matchups, ninth seeded Salem took on tenth seeded Southside while around nine-ten matchup featured Melbourne and Rector. Both bouts saw campaigning from both sides but in the end, only one fan base in each spot could advance to the next round.

Salem Greyhound fans took an early lead against Southside and never looked back. They went on to advance taking 65.1% of the overall fan vote. The Greyhounds fans will move on to face top-seeded Batesville in the next round.

In the Melbourne/Rector contest, it was a barn-burner. Rector held a lead early on in the vote but Melbourne used their Facebook page to rally the troops and took over in the late afternoon. However, the Cougars fans tacked on late votes and came out with the victory by a total of two votes.

Day two of the tournament on Tuesday will see 9 Midland vs. 10 Harding Academy and 8 Manila vs. 9 Piggott. Voting opens at 11 pm on Monday night and will conclude on Tuesday night at 10 pm.
