A-State Women’s Basketball unveils Non-Conference Schedule

JONESBORO, AR (ASU) – Arkansas State head women’s basketball coach Brian Boyer unveiled his team’s 2015-16 non-conference basketball schedule Monday afternoon, which includes five games against 2015 postseason teams, including a home matchup with Wichita State.

The slate of games features three contests at the Convocation Center, including the Nov. 21 home opener against the Shockers who went 29-5 last season and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Other home games slated for this year include a Dec. 12 meeting with Alcorn State and a Dec. 16 battle with Austin Peay.

“We feel like this is another schedule that will challenge our team and prepare us for Sun Belt play,” Boyer said. “Our team put ourselves into consideration for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth last year and it is possible that the strength of this schedule will allow us to do the same this season, if we have success.  Both Chattanooga and Florida Gulf Coast finished the season in the Top 25 while Nebraska and Wichita State were both NCAA Tournament teams, so we should be able to see how we stack up against post-season caliber teams during the non-conference portion of our schedule.”

The Red Wolves, who are coming off a second round appearance in the 2015 WNIT, will square off with four other teams that advanced to the postseason last year as well. Chattanooga, Florida Gulf Coast and Nebraska each took part in the NCAA Tournament, while UT Martin played in the WNIT.

The 2015-16 season will begin Saturday, Nov. 14 in Cookeville, Tenn., as A-State takes on Tennessee Tech followed by a road contest with UT Martin on Nov. 18. The Skyhawks compiled a 22-10 record last season, including a perfect 16-0 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference.

After its home opener with Wichita State, the Red Wolves return to the road for a three-game swing against Chattanooga (Nov. 25), Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 28) and Florida (Dec. 7). A-State handed the Mocs a 57-52 defeat in Jonesboro last season and was the last team to beat Chattanooga before the Mocs fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The matchup with Florida Gulf Coast will be a return trip after the Eagles played in Jonesboro a year ago and handed the Red Wolves a 74-68 setback, despite the fact that the Red Wolves held a five-point lead at halftime. The Eagles finished the year with a 31-3 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The road trip will come to a close with a contest against SEC opponent Florida. It will be the first meeting between the Red Wolves and Gators since the 1998-99 season.

Following the road trip Arkansas State returns home for its home against Alcorn State and Austin Peay before returning to the road to take on Nebraska in its final non-conference tilt. The Cornhuskers had a 21-11 overall record in 2014-15 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Before the start of the regular season, A-State will host a pair of exhibition matchups against Henderson State (Nov. 3) and Harding (Nov. 10).
